AD 288: Emperor Diocletian launches a campaign into Germanic territory from the province of Raetia (Switzerland).
 
AD 290: Following his victory over Emperor Maximian's fleet, the usurper Carausius invades the European mainland and re-establishes his military and administrative presence in northern Gaul.
 
AD 292: An uneasy peace is established between the emperors Diocletian and Maximian on the one hand, and the rival emperor Carausius on the other.
 
AD 304: Pope Marcellinus dies at Rome after an 8-year reign. The papal throne will remain vacant until 308.
 
AD 308: The Han-Zhao Dynasty is established in northern China, marking the official inception of the long lasting Uprising of the Five Barbarians.
